Millcreek Home Inspections

Illegal Connection Inspections
Target Various Areas in Millcreek

In 2004 Millcreek Township committed to the removal of illegal (clean water) connections to the sanitary sewer system. (More information can be found on this website) The inspection team has been assigned target areas based on problem prioritization.

The Kearsarge area was first to undergo scrutiny because of a commitment made to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, numerous basements that were routinely flooded and raw sewage that too frequently had to be bypassed to Walnut Creek. Not all homes in the Kearsarge area had to be inspected. Subsystems within the Kearsarge area that were particularly troublesome were prioritized. Between the 150 corrected violations and the recently constructed overflow retention system, this problem area appears to be under control. Some time in the future, the remaining homes will be inspected and corrected to eliminate Erie charges for the transportation of clean water.

The current area being inspected is the South Shore area from Montpelier to Marshall north of West Lake Road. In this instance, all homes in the target area will be inspected. During storm events, illegal connections have been overwhelming the Shorehaven sewage pumping station causing unacceptable seepage from the system into Lake Erie. Additionally, sewage flows from the entire South Shore area have routinely exceeded the purchased capacity at the entry point to the City of Erie sewer system. This has resulted in fines from Erie of approximately $500,000 since 2002. The Authority has also paid fines to the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.

Two future target inspection areas are being considered. One is the East Gore / Cidermill area and the second is Colonial Avenue at Alison and Marcia. Both of these areas are served by sewage pumping stations that are at or exceed their capacities during storm events, requiring expensive emergency procedures.
